I still remember proudly going to vote for the first time. I was so excited. Finally. Railroad commissioner? Are you sure that's a real office? Well, I don't know exactly what they do, but I'll vote for the Republican. I'm really rockin' the vote! City Council? Place 6? Uh...guess I'll vote for the...Republican? No worries, it's a straight party ticket for me. It's time the voice of America's youth was heard!
And that voice--according to me--was stupid and completely uninformed.
So since then I've always tried to be a little more informed when I step into the booth. But I seriously don't like politics. Not office politics. Not social politics. Not political politics.
Believe me, I am grateful for the opportunity to vote and I will gladly exercise it. But I could do without the circus leading up to November 4.
Today I wouldn't label myself as Republican or Democrat. I like to live in the fantasy world of 'can't we all get along' and 'why can't I vote for some pieces of both candidates?'
And the more the candidates and parties talk trash about the other instead of telling me why I should get behind them in the first place, the more annoyed I get.
In the hopes of staving off apathy I have been forcing myself to watch both the DNC and RNC. But between the smug jokes, the plugs for future campaigns and the stupid, stupid stories it's been hard not to immediately put the TV on mute.
Two that stick out in my mind:
Stupid #1
From Hillary Clinton..."To my sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits..." You were misinformed when your speech writer told you that would be hip to say. And you're not fooling anyone. You're not backing Obama; you're already campaigning for 2012.
Stupid #2:
Huckabee gets up and the verbal diarrhea immediately begins. He takes way too long to tell a story about a random teacher in a random classroom who wouldn't give her students desks. She (and apparently Huckabee) then make the inspiring conclusion that McCain fought for our country...and...he bought you...that desk? You could almost see the wheels turning...How did I get here? Must tie it back to McCain...yeah, McCain. McCain bought you that desk!
And to that I say...WTF? I wish this was an election where I only had to choose the next Railroad Commissioner.

Well, now that you've made the choice so clear...

I totally agree. This year I am at ends I don't really like any of our choices for PRESIDENT. I like views from both. What you said about the slandering of each I totally agree with.
Amen to that! Oh and I especially liked how the little sister licked her hand and rubbed her baby brother's hair with her spit. Classic!
Exactly. As G.W. most eloquently put it, "Fool me once, shame on... ... ...me. Fool me twice... ... ... Fool me, can't fool me again!"
I can't wait for Nov 4th to be here and over already. The only redeeming thing about watching the conventions is that grown adults think its cool to act like teenagers at a Jonas Brothers concert, complete with lame hats, blinking rings, and terrible dancing.
If I hear the phrase "hockey mom" one more time, I may vomit. I really, really wanted to like Sarah Palin. Granted, I am very liberal in my beliefs and would never vote Republican for social issues alone, but I at least thought it would be cool to have a woman running for VP. Until I watched her speech and heard her so hatefully and gleefully tear down Obama's history of service to not only our country but to social issues that mean a lot to me. Now, I certainly saw plenty of that at the DNC as well, but she just seemed to enjoy it so much more than anyone else I saw speak. GAG.
Excuse me but do you ever READ the stuff you write??? Talk about TALENT!!
Kathy
I was a fan of Diddy's campaign in '04. VOTE OR DIE!
So I'm the only one who likes it better now that the candidates have taken the gloves off? Meh. At least now we can see what all these people are really like. Nobody is hiding behind the old "this campaign is gonna be a different sort of campaign" bullcorn anymore. ;)
