Movie nerd

I haven't downloaded any pictures from NYC and I still don't have an apartment (this deserves it's own post later), so I'm giving you my movie reviews. If you don't like my movie choices (Jason Reale), then tough--you don't know what you're talking about. :) And I'm stealing Jacob's idea for a post anyway. So onto the 3 movies I've seen in one week. I told you I was a nerd.

But first, here are the items I have to take with me to every movie:
1: zip up hoodie
2: Hot Tamales
3: Diet Coke
#2 and 3 stashed in my purse, of course

3:10 to Yuma
I'll admit it. I'm a Texas girl through and through, but Westerns have never been my favorite. I have vivid memories of watching Westerns with my family growing up. By watching I mean I usually made it through the first 10 minutes and woke up in time to see the ending credits. But Jacob and Tiffani both blogged about this one. And the remake was written by two Baylor grads, so I thought I'd give it a chance.

The movie was so good and I was actually on the edge of my seat through most of it. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe were both great and I have to say I was skeptical at first of them playing cowboys. But somehow you get attached to both characters. People in the theater actually clapped and cheered when Christian Bale mentioned he was stationed in Massachusetts during the Civil War. But no one paid attention when they mentioned Abilene. Probably Abilene, KS, but I'm going with it.

My review: Go see it!

Elizabeth: The Golden Age
I actually just saw Elizabeth for the first time this summer. (I fell asleep during that one too and had to watch it again the next day. Are you sensing a pattern with me and movies??) But I loved the first one and couldn't wait for the second movie to come out. So I marked my calendar to see it opening weekend. Super nerd.

This movie was still good and told pieces of history I'm sure I skimmed over in school. But I was disappointed that it was just good. Maybe I had hyped it up too much? Cate Blanchett was still amazing and for once I actually liked Clive Owen. But the storyline was slow and the artistic side of the movie seemed a little forced. I think I counted about 20 scenes that were filmed through a window or reflected in a mirror.

My review: Rent it (but along with the first movie as well)

Into the Wild
I actually knew nothing of this movie before seeing it. I was bored on Sunday and this movie sounded interesting. So, Hot Tamales and Diet Coke in hand, I at least thought I would be entertained for a couple of hours.

The movie is based on a true story and those true stories get me everytime. I now want to read books on this kid in the movie and find out even more. It's that good. You get caught up in the story; you're frustrated, you're sad, you're happy. His story and where it takes him, what he does is so crazy. I hadn't seen the lead actor, Emile Hirsch, in any other movies. But he's so good and so believable. And he lost 40 pounds during the filming...isn't there Oscar buzz when someone gets that much into character?

My review: Go see it! And pull out your old Jack London books for reading material after.

So there you have it--my movie reviews for the week. Hopefully I will have some updates soon on what's going on with me!

Hey - I stumbled onto your blog from couple of blog links, and the word Boston always catches my eye :) I was a southern girl in Boston a couple of years ago for grad school. If you haven't found it yet, you have to go to Anna's Taqueria for an amazing and super cheap burrito(one is on beacon street and another is on harvard street - both in brookline). Also Haymarket on Saturday mornings near Faneuil Hall. Enjoy!
